Background

Kurdistan Regional Government is responsible for the management, operation, repair, and upgrading of the crude oil pipeline infrastructure in the Kurdistan region of Iraq. Their work spans across multiple engineering disciplines — including mechanical, civil, and electrical — and plays a critical role in maintaining the reliability and performance of the region’s oil transportation network.

As part of their ongoing pipeline maintenance and quality assurance programme, our customer required a bespoke solution for crude oil sampling — one that would ensure accurate, repeatable measurements of oil quality and composition under controlled pressure conditions.

Engineering Challenge

The sampling of crude oil presents unique challenges. The equipment must handle viscous, volatile, and potentially corrosive fluids, while maintaining consistent pressure and temperature to ensure representative samples.

The key technical requirements included:

• A fully custom-built system suitable for the physical and chemical characteristics of crude oil
• Compatibility with pressurised sampling operations
• High resistance to corrosion and contamination
• Ease of use and maintenance in demanding field environments
• Full compliance with industry standards for safety and material traceability

In addition, the system needed to be robust and durable, capable of withstanding the harsh environmental conditions found across oilfield sites in the Kurdistan region.

Solution

SR-TEK’s engineering team designed and built a complete Crude Oil Sampling Bench solution from the ground up, specifically tailored to the customer requirements.

Each sampling bench was constructed using high-grade stainless steel for maximum durability and chemical compatibility with crude oil. The system included:

• Custom-engineered pressure vessels for controlled oil containment
• Precision valves and fittings for accurate flow management
• Integrated gauges and regulators for monitoring and adjusting pressure during sampling
• Sampling ports and collection units designed to minimise contamination and ensure reproducibility

SR-TEK worked in close collaboration with Kurdistan Regional Government’s  engineering team throughout the design and manufacturing process — ensuring the final configuration met their operational standards, safety requirements, and workflow needs.

Result

The newly designed SR-TEK Crude Oil Sampling Benches enabled Kurdistan Regional Government  to perform accurate, efficient, and repeatable sampling operations as part of their ongoing pipeline maintenance and monitoring activities.
